Tdi won't start

Asked by Vin76 Jan 17, 2016 at 06:16 PM about the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Have a 2012 Jetta tdi and when I got back
from vaca (it sat for a week in 30-40
degree temps) I went to start and it barley
turned over and now it's completely dead.
Almost like the battery is totally dead but
the battery is fully charged ( even tried
jumping).  Any idea what's going on?

First remove battery terminals and clean then try jumping again this time if it does not take a jump right away leave cables on for about 30- 45 seconds and slightly rev up vehicle that is jumping yours then try to start.

How did you measure the battery's charge level? It is probably weak/dead and following "Firebird's" answer will get you going. If not take the battery out and either have it charged or replaced.

I'll give that a try. All internal lights, radio, etc all still work fine when I turn the key. Even when jumping it I get nothing when I try to start. Makes me think it's more than the battery. Could it be the starter at 68k miles on a 2012?

Yes it could be the starter or starter solinoid or check for loose connections at the solinoid. Also you can try tapping on the starter with a hammer while trying to start vehicle at the same time if it starts the brushes in the starter are bad but still can be a bad starter solinoid causing starter not to work.

Did you ever find a resolution to your question? We're having the same issue with our 2012 TDI Sportwagen. It sat for about 2.5 weeks and won't turn over. Light and radio are working, but no engine.

Anybody find out what this issue is? I'm having the exact same problem with my tdi right now. Sat for a couple weeks and then when I tried starting it, it wouldn't start. The starter won't even engage and the lights and radio all work fine.

I know this is old but try taking the gas cap off and starting, seemed to do it on mine. Had vapor build up and just had to release that from the tank, simple but something to try.
