Difference in awd 4x4 in sportage

Hi I was looking to know the difference in
AWD and 4x4. Does AWD drive all four
wheels permantly, or is it front wheel drive
until AWD is needed, ie. when traction is
lost?

Dynamax All-Wheel Drive System great system. read about it. disengages above 25 mph. I have it on my Sorento SX Limited drives thru the snow great.
