I would do the first one at 3000 just because it is breaking in- after that, you have an oil life monitor that will tell you- if you aren't putting on enough miles, change it every 6 mos. because you still get condensation inside the motor. your Terrain has a synthetic blend, oil, so you can go 6-10000 miles between changes- be sure to rotate the tires at each change then to get maximum life out of those too. I hope this helps.

My 2012 terrain usas about ONE quart to one quart and a half every thousand. The dealer tells me that is normal. After seven General Motors products I know they are wrong As a new driver in late 50s buying cars at $300. now that was a different story

This is a late response to your oil usage question, but GMC has a major recall on oil consumption issues. They have to do an oil consumption test to qualify for a major engine repair. This requires having the oil changed at the dealer, and driving for 500 to 1,000 miles to document loss. I believe they replaced my pistons and power train at no cost.

My oil consumption has gone up also. Finally figured out the problem with the cartridge install and tight fit with the Terrain causing it to go in at an angle. It catches the oblong hole instead of the center one, allowing dirty oil to circulate and wear on the engine. The cartridge will appear rippled when you remove it. The only way to prevent is to put the cartridge in first and then the cap, it snaps into place. It is a major design flaw that could have been prevented unless it is intensional to sell more vehicles.

I will clarify this is the oil filter cartridge. I also put in a K and N and MObil1 filter, they seem more robust and do not offset as easy as the Delco. I will try the MObil1 oil with the high mileage additives, this should also lower consumption which was almost 2 quarts in 5000 miles. Abolutely not a normal GM oil consumption. KN in there also, not Delco filter.
