my toyota solara '02 master cylinder needs replacement...what does that mean

The master cylinder is a foot-operated hydraulic pump (brake pedal) that sends pressurized fluid through the brake lines to the brake calipers/wheel cylinders where there are slave cylinders at the opposite end of the hydraulic system.
