Check for loose, brittle or damaged vacuum lines around the intake manifold and also going to anything towards the rear of the car. These older Bimmers vacuum lines do not age well and become very brittle over time, especially if they are in the path of any leaking oil. The exhaust also uses vacuum to close exhaust flaps when warming up. You'll find that vacuum line underneath the car right next to the muffler.

I had this issue and I replaced the Mass Air Flow sensor.
