Question type: Maintenance & Repair

my 2004 300 m special has a popping/cracking noise in the steering when I turn the wheels from right to left and viceversa. Why?

Is it power steering? Is the sound from the PS, or downtown, under the car? in this case it could be your tie rod ends goin' without lube, also this is a FWD monster, so axle boots may be comprimized, get under there and prod them with a screwdriver to see if all the grease has leaked out.

The upper strut mounts are shot. The spring hangs up sometimes too. You might get some temporary relief by squirting some oil up in there. -- My Pontiac was doing the popping thing for several years. I was able to squirt some oil in from the top because the rubber doughnut cup had openings around the top. Sometimes my car would pull to the left and I had to stop the car and turn the wheels all the way to the right to get it to drive straight. --- I ended up replacing them with Monroe quick struts. The quick struts have everything all bolted together. New struts, new springs, new mounts -- very easy install and when my mechanic checked, it didn't even need an alignment.
