Question type: Maintenance & Repair

belt broke because of a bad alternator. that was replaced. the belt goes
behind what looks to me to be the timing belt though it is not geared in any
way. Do I need to take that belt off and if so how.

No the serpentine Does NOT go behind the timing belt! The diagram looks like a single belt? some Fords have 2 belts not that uncommon BUT 2012 Focus sure appears to run only one belt.

I know what I'm looking at. The outer belt goes from the vibration dampner to a single pulley below it. The inner pulley goes from the dampner to an idler to a tensioner to the alternator.

update. The outer belt that goes down from the dampner goes straight down to the a/c compressor. Anyone that has any useful information on how to remove that belt so i can replace the inner one please let me know.

Note to self. There's a tool that goes between the pulley and belt to roll it off when you turn the pulley. Also used to put belt on. can be rented from most big chain auto parts store for free when returned. Not the tension pulley tool so don't get that one.

the belt in question goes to the air conditioner which is mounted to the bottom of the engine. there are 4 bolts to take out in the plate and one more by where the line goes in. When these 5 bolts are removed the belt can be removed so you can get the main serpentine belt on. There was a 14 mm. nut to move the tensioner and belt goes on easy. I had to pry a little on the plastic piece on the front of the engine compartment. Be careful doing this so it doesn't break, but it worked fine so I could get movement (clicks) on the socket wrench. Nothing had to be removed except the bolts holding the air conditioner.
