Warning lights

Asked by Daniel May 27, 2016 at 07:13 PM about the 1993 Cadillac DeVille Touring Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

There is a ( service engine soon ) warning light and
right next to it there is a  ( service vehicle soon )
warning light  on the same instrument panel that
has the speedometer of my 1993 Cadillac Sedan
Deville. The Service engine soon light stays on all
the time when engine is running.  Is this light also
referred to as the check engine light ? And if so
how did my car pass  smogg test and why did the
technician even perform the test with this light on?
When I use the OBD two codes come up E41 and
E58 , how do I reset to get this service engine soon
light to go out?

The service engine soon light serves the same purpose as a check engine light. Code 41 looks to be related to a camshaft position sensor, located in the distributor, possible causes listed as "Wiring open circuit/short circuit to ground, CMP sensor, ECM". Code 58 is hard to track down, in some articles it's listed as a transmission fluid temp sensor low voltage code, and in others, it looks like a code for the antitheft, possible causes listed as "Incorrect ignition key, wiring open circuit/short circuit to ground/short circuit to positive, immobilizer control module, ECM" The difference between your two lights is stated as: The instrument panel cluster contains the ‘SERVICE ENGINE SOON’ message when the PCM detects a fault in the engine control system. A ‘SERVICE VEHICLE SOON” message will be displayed when the PCM detects a fault in the Generator, Fuel Pump Circuit, VCC Brake Switch, PRNDL Switch, or Heated Window Request Problem. Hope this helps.
