dash lights and ac go on and off

the lights on the dash go out and the ac stops also and then they come back on again.

wouldn't the engine die if it was the ignition switch?

no, the ignition switch controls the starter and fuse box. by turning the key it sends power to the fuses and also ingauges the starter to start the car. could be loose wire on starter or it is just going out.
