Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a 1999 catera, 3.0 v-6. The car will not start on the first attempt. It
will start on the 2nd or 3rd every time, but never on the first. I have no
trouble codes relating to this so am at kind of a loss as what to check next. I
am a mechanic so am no stranger to repairs but this isn't something I've seen
before. The security light does not illuminate when this happens so don't
believe it to be a security issue, though I could be wrong. It seems to be
electrical.
I also notice under heavy acceleration, from a stand-still, it will hesitate
before taking off. May or may not be a related problem, but thought I'd ask
about this as well.

I already went through the issue of the seal leaking on the shift shaft and
filling the shift position switch with transmission fluid, therefore confusing
the computer. Was told it needed a transmission, imagine that. I opened the
switch, 7 screws. cleaned it out with parts cleaner. dried it off thoroughly.
Coated the board with di-electric grease and reassembled it. re-installed it and
it shifts beautifully. So much for the $3000 to $7000 transmission rebuild they
said I needed. It cost me less that $10, including the new seal.

If anybody has any information on the no-start issue or the hesitation issue I
would very much like to hear it.

One other thing. What is this symbol on the right side of the instrument panel
up top ? :O: (is actually 3 dots on each side, not 2) Thought it might be tire
pressure monitor but not sure if this car came equipped with that or not. I wish
there had been an owners manual with it, lol

Hello Bobbyc67, Did you ever figure out what was causing your 1999 Catera Cadillac to not start on the first attempt? We are having the same issue with ours. It will start, but only on the 2nd or 3rd attempt every time. I thought replacing the fuel pump might solve the problem but I have not done it yet. Please advise if you where able to determine what was causing the problem. Thanks!

if its cold out under the hood is supposed to be a cord you plug in to warm the starter or what not.... my catera is doing the same as above but mine it seemed the transmission went out but i had reverse no problem it was driving where i had the problem but it wouldnt go above 20 miles per hour and if it did the engine went high on rpms.... i pulled off the road started again and it wouldnt go above 10 miles per hour this time when i made it to the gas station i noticed brown fluid on the ground thought it was oil and it smelled burned like hell what you guys think new transmission or no?
