Switching to neutral while driving damaging?

Asked by adviceseeker1560 Jul 25, 2012 at 11:03 AM about the 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T RWD

Question type: General

I own a 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T Manual. I have seen that by putting the car in neutral while its rolling the mpg indicator goes from 16 mpg city to 21 mpg for city driving. I was wondering if this would harm the transmission? (I do this usually when I am on a decline)

I do it all the time with many of my vehicles and do not know that it would cause damage as long as you use the clutch to put it there and put it back in gear. Rev matching going back into gear is advised and helpful for clutch wear reasons

There is no damage caused to your car from putting it into neutral. As long as you shift correctly it just removes all the torque on the drive shaft. One could argue that it wears your clutch out faster because you are using it more, but again with the way these cars are built nothing that need worrying. It can save a little gas but not a ton. ^^^ Rev matching is very important to keep the integrity of your gearbox.
