04 Mercedes C32 AMG spits and sputters in gear.

Asked by Sep 03, 2017 at 11:55 AM about the 2004 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 32 AMG

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Out if the blue, the car started sputtering. I
took it to auto parts store to have code ran
from engine light being on.  It came back
saying something about vacuum and the
recommended fix was to replace the fuel
cap. I haven't done that yet.  Once the fuel
got down to 1/3 of a tank, it stalled and then
wouldn't start after.  I let it sit a couple days,
trying to research what the problem could
be. I decided to try adding more fuel and try
it again.  It finally started.  It was reving
great. When i put it in her tho and tried to
drive it, it started spitting and sputtering.
Now I'm afraid to drive it for fear of having
to pay for another tow.
I can hear the fuel pump come on.  Before I
added the gas to it, when I would check the
schrader valve, a few drops of gas would
come out and then some air and then
nothing.  That's what made me decide to try
and add more gas, to see if maybe I was out
of gas and the gage didn't read correctly. I
have changed the fuel filter and nothing has
changed.  Could the pump be going bad?  Is
there a vacuum leak?  I don't know what
replacing the fuel cap would do as far as it
running better and as far as it not starting at
all with 1/3 tank.
Any help offered would be much
Thank you,
