BMW e46 not shifting

Asked by Kevin_N29 Nov 25, 2016 at 11:45 AM about the 2003 BMW 3 Series 325Ci Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hey I was driving on the freeway yesterday and I
was going about 75- 80 mph and all of a sudden I
heard and pretty large thump and then I look at my
gauges and then there appears a circle with an
exclamation mark inside of the circle. After that it
was like I was stuck on 1 gear. The car was drivable
but it takes forever to get up to speed. I know it has
something to do with the transmission but any
specifics y'all know what it could be? It's and
automatic. Thanks

My car did something very similar to yours. However mine happened at startup and acted like it was stuck in first gear also. I had to use the sport shift mode just to get it around 35mph. I pulled over in a grocery store parking lot and turned it off. Went to start it again and nothing. It kept cranking but wouldn't start. I checked the fuel pump fuse in the glove box and it was fine. Finally had it towed to a mechanic and told me I had blown a fuse, apparently the fuel pump fuse. I guess there is another one underneath the hood. They said after replacing the fuse it starts right up. They traced the short to the crankshaft position sensor, so they replaced it. It had nothing to do with the transmission.
