When I start my car morning noon or evening, I have to let it warm up
from10-15 minutes.  It will then drive ok for about 47 miles and then it will
lose pulling power.  I have to pull over turn the car off and when I start it
again it is usually good for another 5-10 miles

If the check engine lite comes on when it happens, I have to clear the
codes.  I have a 1999 323i auto transmission.

I took it to the transmission shop and was quote a cost of $1700-$2500 to
get it fixed.

Anybody knows what's going on with this car?

a transmission if the transmission filter needs changing, may do exactly that....like a sponge taking on fluid takes time to get moving and circulate~...just a guess, but I do believe that change the tranny filter and perhaps things go right again~ http://www.ebay.com/bhp/e46-transmission-filter

There is no code unless the check engine light comes on. It is usually the transmission light that comes on and the driving manual says that I am to pull over, turn the engine off, pull the parking brakes and let the car sit for 30 -60 seconds. I will have to wait until the check engine light comes on again to get that code. Thanks
