Some engines have knock sensors which can trip the check engine light but throw no code. One cause is a bad spark plug. Check the spark plugs for one that might have buildup on it. If present, clean that plug or replace it. They are supposed to be good for up to 100,000 miles before servicing, but even new parts can fail prematurely. You may even want to replace all the plugs and wires just to have consistent spark at all cylinders.

If the light is on their is a code but a genaric code reader can't read it you need to find a shop with a better scanner it may be a communication error with another module , abs, body controls , trans , or active steering control
