In researching a 2011 328i, the VIN number returned this info: 3.0L I6 DI.

Ahh...reading about it now, thanks! Makes sense...to increase fuel efficiency and power but better control emissions...goes along with the SULEV designation. The funny thing is the guy who checked me in at BMW Service this morning just looked at me blankly when I asked!
