Car engine stalls/dies while driving

Asked by Ccbuckley Apr 06, 2018 at 11:10 PM about the 2011 Toyota Camry Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Check engine light and slip indicator light on. Car dies multiple times on my way to work today (about 20 min drive). Turn key and park. Restart, drive some more then dies again. Seems to happen more when letting off gas or braking. What is going on? How do I fix this?

Suggest you have the computers on this vehicle Scanned for trouble codes. Some Auto Parts stores will do this for Free. Write down the Code ID and description.

Make....Model....Year.....Engine type? Any warning lights on or flashing when the engine is running? Recent attempts to repair this issue?

It’s a 2011 Toyota Camry, 4 cylinder. No lights were on yesterday and was driving just fine. Had an oil change and front brakes/rotors changed a week and a half ago. The engine light comes on starting this morning and the slip indicator light comes on once you put it in drive. But nothing flashing. When the car stalls, the battery light turns on, of course.

No attempts yet to repair the issue as we hadn’t noticed anything. We did have the code read this morning and it’s reading an O2 sensor, but would that cause it to stall while driving?

Ok....the next step in the diagnosis is an underhood inspection for anything that may have been inadvertently disconnected...loose....during the last repair. Also..suggest you call the nearest auto parts store and ask if they will Scan the Computers on this vehicle. Most stores do this scan for FREE. Write down the number and descriptions of all cdes. Get back with results.

Thank you. My boyfriend is a mechanic and he has a code reader. I just don’t know specifically what code fired back. He hasn’t had a chance to look at it any further. I will do those two things and get back. Thank you!

The codes are P0171: system too lean bank P0101: mass or volume air flow A circuit range performance

Ok....next....inspect the throttle body for carbon and dirt. Clean same as described in many You Tube videos. Then inspect and clean the Mass Airflow Sensor using special spray solvent. Then...most important...change the Air Filter Caution....some of these cheap filters shed a nealy invisible fuzz that collects on the MAF and ..bingo...same problem. Same codes.

Thank you so much! We will check that as soon as I get home. I greatly appreciate your assistance! Stay tuned...:)

So when I took my car in to get looked at and fixed it was a screw or something loose with the cabin air filter. It was causing too much air to get in.

We have done all but get a new filter. Parts store didn’t have one and we are picking up the filter tomorrow. Still having the same problem after cleaning the MAF sensor and throttle body.

Appears its time to start chasing that p0171.First thing that comes to mind ....vacumn leaks. Another....lower than normal fuel pressure. Is there a fuel filter located under hood?

Thank you for the info! We did find a vacuum leak this morning and repaired that. So far that appears to be the problem! I really appreciate you helping to guide us in what to look for!

My 2010 is doing the exact same thing. We can't all have a vaccum leak, huh? What was the final diagnosis? Anyone?

Can we confirm the make model year? Any warning lights on or flashing when the engine is running? Let's reconfirm the complaint......it's been a few years.

Tony here are my specs: 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid 196K miles - Car hesitates on acceleration then stalls when driving or stopping, however, a simple restart of the engine and it goes away for a half mile or so then stalls again. The VSC warning light, check engine light, check Hybrid sytem light and slip indicator light is on and all have been on for 8,000 miles ago prior to the stalling. Here's what I've done prior to the stalling: Sanned codes, Replaced 12V auxiliary battery from dealer and replaced faulty ABS module. 8,000 miles later to address the stalling, I've done the following: Disconected 12v battery for 5 minutes in an attempt to reset the codes, poured 2 bottles of Techron fuel system cleaner in tank then filled tank, drove in low gear at 3k rpm in an attempt to blow out and possibly unclog the injectors. The hesitation has slightly improved since adding Techron cleaner, however the stalling has not changed after driving over 300 miles! I have attached the code report that came up on the scanner. Thank you for your help!

Suggestion.....there exists a Cooling System to control the temp in and around the HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY PACK. Locate the Filter and clean.....clear....dust and debris out of the system. SB......T-SB-0012-14...........SB.........T-SB-0074-20. SB indicates Service Bulletin. Get back to us with results.

Rstix....Can you tell me specifically where the vacuum leak was. Several of us are having the same exact issues that you did. Thanks!

It was on the intake, on one of the breathing ports. I hope that helps!
