Do I need to replace Volve cover gasket if engine oil is a bit leaking

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When bmw dealer fixed my 2010 BMW X3 engine misfire problem, I was told
that the car had engine oil leak and need to replace valve cover gasket and
transmission pan gasket. The cost was estimated more than $1000. The car
has engine oil low warning light and I just need to add one bottle engine oil
when the light is on. Do I need to spend that big money to fix this engine oil
leak problem?

I cant speak to the transmission pan, but the transmission contains ATF not engine oil. When the valve cover leaks you can see engine oil all over the lower part of the engine on the passenger side. This oil can get into the coils and can cause failures. The misfire is probably from a failed coil. Have the mechanic read the OBC,. which should show a coil failure code. The valve cover is made of plastic and warps over time so the safe bet is to replace it along with the gasket.
