If you are talking codes the computer picks up when something is wrong, you need a scanner to clear the codes.

Are we talking permanent 'engine light' on or actual codes? I have a friend who has such a thing. Their engine light is always on but no codes come up. They've told me everyone tells them all is fine' no codes. I personally never heard of this. If its codes, like the guys say fix them. Sometimes its a process of elimination.

These answers are all incorrect. In order to clear a permanent OBD II code, first clear all of the temporary codes. Then, you need to determine the UTDP or Universal Trip Drive Pattern. This is listed in the FSM or factory service manual. You can not clear this code by disconnecting the battery. The UTDP will give you a series of directions of starting and driving the vehicle at certain speeds and intervals and if done correctly should clear the code. Be advised that the UTDP is vehicle specific.
