Key fob works, but don’t unlock or remote start
44 Answers
check the battery inside the fob, it should be a 3v battery.
Replace the remote batteries with the proper replacement. If those batteries have never been changed they are almost 8 years old. I change mine every few years to avoid problems.
Batteries are new and the remote checks out. Had both tested.
It may be time for a trip to the dealership if batteries aren't the issue.

Went to dealer they're putting out signal but still won't lock or unlock door ($95)
I have the same problem. Have you been able to find a fix yet?
i have a 2013 Ram 1500. For some reason the remote start doesn't work all the time on the key fob. Has new batteries and have the same problem with both fobs. I've been seeing a lot of people saying the same problems. There should be a recall on the key fobs.
Same with me...2 key fobs that the truck will turn on with but they don’t unlock, lock or remote start the truck. ughhhh....2016 RAM Sooo theres nothing we can do????
I found out that on the back of the rubber buttons are little metal contacts that make them work they are Ethier dirty or missing so clean them till they are silver again or super glue them back into place on the rubber and they should work
i fix the problem getting a new fob key replacement
2018 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT here, and exact same issue. both my wife and I's FOBs failed completely. (i didnt know the hard key is within the FOB.....stupid me), managed to get to a point at the ski hill to get my UConnect to open it, and start the truck and go. Got home....they worked fine. Super curious why this is an issue. my truck is under 6 months old....
2015 RAM 2500 key fobs both stopped working when we are near my two sisters and their husbands. They work fine when we are not close to them. Happened twice now. Both mine and wife's fobs are about 3.5 years old. Just took the battery out of mine and reading 3.6V so not a weak battery. Suspecting possible RF interference with one of my familiy's cell phones or car, not sure. Next time we meet with them i'll ask one or the other to turn off their cell phones to see if I can diagnose further. Weird problem. Will update when I find out more.
What about replacing the Radio Frequency Hub?
Two fobs. 2019 Ram. Buttons won't even push down. Bought the truck in February. Wtf? I thought dirty or sticky, but the one fob hasn't seen the light of day.
Just getting this thing fixed, mechanic had to master reset something and reprogram the fobs
Chrysler is having problems with defective immobilizer modules I cant lock or unlock my doors on my 07 Dakota but it starts
Been a year waiting on the part of course it's under warranty got 5 different dates when they will be available
Here's what worked for me (literally just did it). After taking the key fod apart, took a pencil eraser and cleaned the contact points on the circuit board and those located on the rear of the rubber tabs. After cleaning the points, I installed the battery and reassembled the key fod. It worked perfectly after the reassembly. Hopefully this was helpful to guys/gals.
I am so frustrated. Went to dealership bought new batteries for my two fod keys. One will unlock door, one will start the truck. They are so expensive to replace and what happens when it finally wont start the truck anymore. Is there any to start the truck without the Fod? I think this could be a safety issue. I took key out and tried to start the truck, it didn't work. Maybe I am missing something.
I did what noneyo said to do ...he was 100%right !, thanks buddy!mine were so bad the one peice was out of center, cleaned them all and it works just fine! You save me a lot of money thank you ..I owe you one!
Having the same problem, and to top it off, my keylock on the drivers door ( the only one on the whole truck) apparently is jacked up from someone trying to break in. So I can't even get in the truck, grrrrr
Ran across this thread as I have had the same issue. I took my key fob apart and something was loose in these because when I pressed the button directly on the circuit board, it worked. I folded up a piece of paper and stuffed it in the key fob to make everything super tight and now my remote start works every time. So ignorant.
Noneyo's answer worked for me. Clean the contacts.
I believe I may have just figured out the problem on my own key fob for my 2013 1500. I opened up the fob, pulled out the circuit board, removed the battery, and took a key and raised up the 3 prongs under the battery ever so slightly. This way, the battery comes in better contact with those prongs. My fob has zero problems now. It would occasionally work, but hardly ever before. It works 100% of the time now!
had the same problem. did the paper trick in the fob and it worked for a couple months, then same problem. Took the fob apart and removed the battery, used 50% alcohol and a Q tip to clean both sides of circuit board and battery connections. Works 100% now.

None of the buttons worked on my two fobs. I changed out the batteries, and still nothing. I googled how to program a dodge key, followed the directions, and now both fobs work. My dealer quoted me $350 (CAD) per key to replace and reprogram. Easiest $700 I ever saved.
You can also check that the RFID block is firmly attached to the circuitboard. Mine died in my 2015 ram and the dealership wanted 75 bucks to fix it and when i took it apart i noticed it was half flopping, put some paper in the keyfob to hold it snug against the board and it works like a charm now.
Here’s a scary, yet expensive possibility. I had a Toyota FOB stop working because a dipshit friend spilled soda all over the door control pad in my truck. Toyota charged $900 to fix Both sides. Another IDIOT friend spilled a sugary coffee on my 2017 Ram armrest where the control buttons are. My drivers side door won’t unlock OR lock using FOB OR armrest controls! Dodge won’t honor a Warranty repair of item, because they call spilled drinks “Abuse”. I think it’s a way to make consumers Pay. Dodge RARELY honors warranty work!!! Even with a 30k mile Extended bumper to bumper warranty. Dodge Warranty’s are CRAP!!!
Ugh... mine did the same thing today 2018 ram 1500 slt. Both keys didn’t work. Came home was pissed off and went back and stupid things worked. Time for a new truck I guess. Too much going on right now with mine. Four inner brakes gone, and four calipers. Plus it’s a pos and can’t haul anything.
I Have 3 keyfobs, one has never really been used. Pushing buttons on all three the lights of truck flash but the doors won't lock or unlock. I suspect something in the programming in the truck body control module. Mine is a 2015 Eco Diesel with 283,000 kms so I have kind of been waiting for this shit to stat happening. I will try disconnecting the battery and see if the computer does a reset.
Kyle you had the answer for my fob not working thank you many times I am pasting your instructions below, you had the fix for my fob problems, one of the rubbers were off in each fob and were dirty, cleand and replaced works again, thanks. Below are the instructions that may get your fob working again,,,,,,,,,,,,,Kyle answered about a year ago I found out that on the back of the rubber buttons are little metal contacts that make them work they are either dirty or missing so clean them till they are silver again or super glue them back into place on the rubber and they should work

Hello I have a ram 2011 and my key fobs are doing the same thing killing the batteries and will not unlock the door or my remote start work but it will crank the truck any help would be very much appreciated jsandersnew@ymail.com..jessi and thank u soso.much
I’ve had this same issues with one of my remotes since I bought my 2014 Ram 1500. I tried the above with no success. I finally pinpointed it to a battery connection issue. I put a piece of aluminum foil under the three tabs and folded it over down onto the where the metal contacts connect. My remote went from not working to actually being able to lock/unlock the truck. I’m going to get a piece of copper this week th try out.

I have a 2012 Ram and ended up buying cheap replacements (2 for $47) as my dealer said that 9 out of 10 usually reprogram with no problem. Instead of 200 each and 70 each to program, he charged 80 total. Also informed me that even if the Ram's fob is not locking/unlocking, it should always start even if the battery is dead because the fob draws power from the truck when inserted and does not need the battery.

I have a 2017 Ram longhorn. Two fobs, one is never used. Worked fine yesterday morning. Drove 350 miles and made 2 stops. Worked fine. Got to hotel. Checked in worked fine. Parked in wrong place, moved truck, worked fine. Went back 10 minutes later to unload truck and neither fob would work. Will try above tips but sure seems weird.

This same thing happened to me this week i have 2021 1500. Called service they said check the batteries. I already knew that wasnt the problem because both fobs went down on the same day and the truck is 2 months old. They told me to bring it in and leave it with them(who has time for that?) The way i fixed it was to pop out the physical key and unlock the car and then lock it. After that the fobs worked again like normal. Sounds funny but it worked for me.
I just did this same thing on my ‘20 Ram 1500 Laramie. Same diagnosis, remote wouldn’t lock/unlock nor remote start. Popped the physical key in the door like DaveFromNY and it fixed mine too!
I just don't understand. They should be a recall. It is pathetic that every body has to go through changes. Not Right
I agree wholeheartedly. Awesome truck but it's just a damn shame that they don't correct this issue.

DIDNT HAVE ANY ALCOHOL BUT A LITTLE KICK ASS MOUTH WASH AND A Q TIP CLEANED THOSE TINY LITTLE DISCS BEHIND THE LOCK&UNLOCK BUTTONS AND SNAPPED THE FOB BACK TOGETHER WENT OUTSIDE AND I AM HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY... NONEYO STRIKES AGAIN

my 2016 1500 key fob stopped working, i just had the key fob battery replaced 2 weeks ago, and the truck battery replaced last week. i used my spare key fob for about 1 week. one day i started the truck remotely with the good fob and decided to insert the non working fob in the truck and try to drive it. it worked and somehow both fobs work now.
My 2015 Ram 2500 6.7 Turbo Diesel with 120k miles. Out of four FOB's, three will not function at all for lock/unlock, Panic or remote start but do start the truck. One FOB functions entirely as it should. It is not a battery issue of any kind anywhere and neither is it a contact issue within the remotes. All three failed simultaneously. Still looking for answers.

I turned my cell phone off and my Fob started working. Cell phone on again and Fob still working. I think it's a Chinese spy balloon or something.
Thank you DavefromNY, your tip worked for me! I did this while standing outside my 2020 ram truck. Lock all doors manually from inside, close the doors. Pull the physical key out. Unlock driver door with physical key. Open door and unlock all doors from drivers door panel. All key fobs work now to lock/ unlock all doors!
