If this is an automatic, turn the key on, and put your foot on the brake to be able to shift into neutral.

wrong... the cars that have this feature are only for the later models after 2014. If the car is not shifting it is either 1 of 2 things. The ignition system requires a new lock cylinder (the piece you put your key into) or the shift control modual has gone bad. this is essentially the computer that unlocks the shifter after you apply the brake while there is power on in the vehicle. If the lock cylinder has alot of play its likely it needs replacement be sure to have All your keys when having this replaced as they need to recode the keys to the car after replacement.
