How do you get the shifting numbers to light up

Vehicle operates perfectly. When driving, the dash light shows it is in D. Moving the shifter back and forth does not change the dash light. This is a 6 speed and previously, when the shifter was moved back and forth, numbers 1 through 6 would show what gear it was in.
