Could a 4X4 button be added?

Asked by Jul 02, 2017 at 04:35 AM about the 2010 Ford Escape Limited 4WD

Question type: Car Customization

I have done some research about this vehicle and like a lot of things about it.
I would like to purchase one and make it into a proficient off road vehicle..
skid plates, brush guards, etc. etc.  I've read that it's 4X4 system is more like
an AWD system in stead of a true 4X4 that stays engaged. Is this correct? If
so is it still good at off-roading?? Could a button be added to engage it and
keep it engaged whenever I want? I also would like an opinion on if a
symmetrical/quattro/Land Rover system is better than true 4x4's? Lol

You can't modify a 2010 Ford Escape into a 4x4. It is a street vehicle that is FWD until wheel slippage is detected and then adds power to the rear wheels via a transfer case and axle shafts, hence the AWD. I would use it on a dirt or stone path at best and use in the snow. Your looking for a true 4X4 with ground clearance. You want something like a Jeep Cherokee or Toyota 4Runner.
