2010 Equinox Transmission Noise

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2010 Equinox LTZ AWD 120K has a noise in the transmission area which resembles a bad wheel bearing.  I changed both front wheel bearings and noise persists.  Checked a sample of the transmission oil but didn't see any metal.  Thought the drivers side output shaft had a little play in it, so I pulled the left axle but everything appears OK.  Ideas?

I'll answer my own question. Two bad bearings in the Transfer Case. Removal of the Transfer Case was a bear but it can be done. Be sure to have multiple universals and extensions for your ratchet. Going to try to source the bearings and seals to rebuild the box myself.

Did you ever get to source the parts? I'm having trouble even finding part numbers for this thing.

Apparently the parts used to be available from GM but are no longer available. I spoke to a transmission rebuild shop who was going to sell me the parts but said he could no longer buy them from GM. I also spoke to several bearing supply houses that said they cannot source automotive bearings. The tranny rebuild shop had access to the the salvage yard database and found me a low mileage replacement for something like $250. Shop around, he gave me prices from $250 to $600. I had to drive an hour to get it but was well worth the savings. A new box from GM was over a grand. The bearings have the p/n's on them, SKF's I believe. The numbers were not std. SKF numbers and were all in a series. I had a feeling I wouldn't be able to buy them anywhere but GM and that's not possible either. BTW, I drained the fluid in the salvage unit (it looked good) and replaced it with the GM stuff, synthetic $15 a quart if I recall. It's been running quiet since the swap. GOOD LUCK
