Do rear brakes really need to be cleaned and adjusted on a Toyota Corolla?

I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla with 45K miles on it.  My Toyota Dealer says I should have the rear brakes cleaned and adjusted at a cost of $72.  I've read that this is an unnecessary maintenance task.
