Are car dealers in Rhode Island required by law to handle the registration for a person buying a used car from their dealership?

Question type: General

My daughter was told by a Rhode Island dealer that the state law required the
dealer to handle the transfer and registration of the car she purchased and
then proceeded to tack on a document prep fee and several other fees.

Like in every other state Sales people are full of it. I pretty sure that is not a law in Rhode Island...They want to add fee's to make more money. Lying to me is not a good thing, if it were me, but this is me, I would walk away from the deal, I HATE LYING PEOPLE !!!

I don't know the law or specific requirements of a dealer oblations in RI but in California the dealer will include registration and all fees in the sales contract at time of sale. NOT tack them on later. These so-called "Document preparation " fees are nothing but the dealer tacking on every penny they can get. They sell a car then attempt to charge money for their time spent doing paperwork. Tom is right, if it's not too late and already paid

I was typing at the same time as joemom. But bottom line, he is right on

All states require dealers to complete the paper work so the states get their tax on the sale. Registration is an option in some cases. High fees are however a rip off.
