Can you drive with a broken shift cable

Car was parked with the shifter in the park position but the transmission was in neural. Car would not start until I was able to bypass the brake shift interlock. After bypassing the interlock I was able to shift and drive the car to the dealer. The Ford dealer is stating that it is a broken shift cable and not the interlock.

Not a smart idea. Next time you bypass the shift interlock, the tranny might be in gear (instead of neutral) and you could have lunged forward. Or you might climb out of the car, shut the door, and watch your car roll down a hill because it wasn't in park. Shift cables can stretch or break. As you already have it at the dealer, may as well let them fix it.

I replaced the cable myself. Just don’t know why it is acting funny and if there is a way to adjust the cable.
