I think I got the right answer from a ford dealership. It has a tapered pipe where the manifold joins the exhaust pipe, there is NO donut or gasket at that point. It probably has a cracked manifold on the passenger side exhaust, that is where the exhaust leak is coming from!!!

Thank you. I have been searching for an answer to that. Someone told me that was probably the case. Now I know how to proceed.

I had a 1970 f100 it took donuts now my 2001 f150 5.4 has none but it leaked so I thought well the hook up hasn't changed my leak was on the passenger side so I said what the hell so I un bolted it went to auto zone matched the size up got a fiber doenut it snugged perfectly put longer bolts in it bolted it up problem solved so I went & did the other side for the hell of it & that's ben 14 years ago cost me under $20 dollars I'm no mechanic but i don't know why ford put metal on metal like that knowing that exhaust fluctuates that's why you got rubber spacers on the exhaust hangers it worked for me I could put headers on it for about $ 160 dollars
