Ignition/key release

Asked by Jul 24, 2017 at 04:50 PM about the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm unable to turn the key to the natural position where the key can be removed from the ignition.  The engine is off and the jeep is in park.  After approximately 2-3 minutes, the ignition will make a "click" noise and I am able to release the key.  Why is this happening and what can be done to resolve this?  It has been doing this for about 4 months.

Make sure the steering wheel is straight, otherwise your vehicle will not let you remove the key. jerk the steering wheel side to side while trying to turn or remove the key. If this doesn't work, put your parking brake on, push the brakes, and try again. You can also try shifting into neutral and back into park, and trying to remove the key. Good luck!
