car problems

Asked by Timothy Oct 16, 2017 at 11:45 PM about the 2005 Ford Escape XLT AWD

Question type: General

hi im having problems with my 2005 ford escape. for two weeks the oil light was blinking on and off and sometimes coming on at stops and never stayed on for very long. at the same time i started hearing a noise that almost made it sound  like a diesel engine with a low knocking that i thimk was coming from a pully on one of the belts as i has seen it wiggle slightly on and off when the car is on. i went and had the oil changed yesterday and since then the oil light stayed on. today as i was going to work the noise got louder and i heard a squicking start along with the knocking getting louder. i pulled into a gas station and as i did the car died as i came to a stop and i had white smoke coming out the back and white smoke coming out of the engine once i removed the oil cap. i checked the dip stick and there is oil in the engine. i am assuming it might be the oil pressure sensor or the oil pump but the car still starts up but its very loud with the knocking. i am looking for any advise on what it could be or the cause before i go to shop to have it worked on as i am very broke and want to go in with a general idea as what i am needing. any input would be very appreciated

Sounds like the oil pump went out and now the engine is knocking or a head gasket blew. Oil light on is serious. Knocking is bad. You should of had that checked, any knocking noises need immediate attention. F

First by stop driving it. Tow it to a shop, do not drive it anymore.

well like a said the light only flashed and never stayed on more than a minute until now but i had it towed to my house and my dad came to look at it tonight, he said that it looks like it not getting any oil to the rockers.i had taking it to orielys to have the computer read and no code for the oil or anything related came up. but i am definitly gonna get the pump replaced and more than likely the head gasket at well to be safe. again thanks for any input

If your top end is knocking look at the rockers and see if one is nearly off, crooked looking, may have a loose one, its possible, not likely but I would look if any noise is from the top end. you can hook up oil pressure gauge to test oil pressure to know if oil pump is bad or needs attention, and a compression test on all cylinders at the spark plug holes will show a bad head gasket most times and a test for exhaust in coolant will show if head gasket is blow in the test that compression test will not show, so I would test this first before doing that work.

I have also seen cam lobes pop off (Pontiac 4 tech) and make all kinds of racket, and if not turned off will bind up on other lobes and pop them off too.

Now if, saying if it was a bad oil pump and its knocking at the bottom end then your left with rebuilding this engine as the knock will likely be a rod bearing spun and loose but can just replace the spun bearing if you have to, may need a thicker one.
