2009 Toyota Highlander

Asked by Michael Jun 08, 2016 at 07:18 PM about the 2009 Toyota Highlander Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2009 Highlander has a severe intermittent
vibration.  It happens more often when it is wet and
it has been sitting.  It almost feels like the brakes
are grabbing, or I lost a weigh but I had this items
checked.  Sometimes we do smell something like
hot brakes but all the time

Your not alone... Check the Toyota Highlander VIBRATION... forums ,Sounds like they are having the same exact problem. They are pretty certain it is the transmission. Let me know what your dealer says. Ours is clueless since they cannot duplicate the problem. TRANSMISSION ISSUE. dealers are fully aware of the NVH problem.

Auto_centric If I turn off the Trac control and VSC it feels the same way as it does when the issue is happening, just not as bad.

I need to drive one. But is it during acceleration? and if so try and get/ feel / see if you can make the the transmission "shudder"? VSC and TC just wheel speed sensors inputs, sending rotational info to the PCM and ABS to try and limit the wheel speed of the one (slipping) signaling more revolutions than the other. IF, set to OFF then the system won't try and cut power and or apply braking to the higher rotational signal wheel? This is a good clue, I need to check one out with test equipment. Regards

Auto_Centric_ It usually starts during acceleration but once it starts it continues for a while regardless of acceleration. Sometimes it quits after you come to a complete stop, like at a stop light and other times it doesn't stop until the vehicle sits for a while, for example 20 minutes or so. Thanks for the help.

Idk. My friends grandma has a 2009 Highlander and it is shaking too. Not that bad but the steering wheel shakes and so does the whole car. She said the dealer replaced the engine mouth, tightened the belt, and replaced a bunch of other stuff but it still shakes!!
