2009 Ford Taurus coolant disappears but no outside leak

Asked by jlash May 02, 2015 at 11:10 PM about the 2009 Ford Taurus SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

White smoke appeared on the right side of the engine, but no visible outside leaks.
Refilled with coolant but lost half of it within 1 hour. Engine temperature indicator was
normal but engine sign "service engine soon" came on. Could this be gasket or heater
coil issue? Could this be a faulty thermostat or water-pump problem? Thanks

Sounds like a bad head gasket or cracked head. Take it to a shop and have it pressure tested.

there is also a combustion leak test kit you can do yourself, its around 45 bucks and is pretty easy, lots of you tube vids on how to do it too.

Sounds like a water pump leaking into the crankcase, a known problem for 3.5 L Duratec engines.
