Gas cap

2005 Ford escape gas cap will not come off.
I turn it counterclockwise but it's still on.
Even tried it clockwise still no avail. Running
super low on gas yo the point my light is on

That happened to me one rainy night and I had to buy some pliers to break the old cap so I could remove the old cap.
