After market tow package for 2009 Suburban

Asked by Nashvegas007 Aug 02, 2013 at 11:14 AM about the 2009 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 1LT RWD

Question type: Car Customization

I have a 2009 1500 without a tow package with a towing capacity of around 5,000#.
The same vehicle with the manufactures tow package can tow around 8,000#.
Can I get a similar tow package after market?  I am trying to tow a 7,500# trailer.
If so, can I buy a single package?  Do I need to piece meal it?

Any tips or suggestions are appreciated.

I believe tow packages come with upgrades on the suspension parts, shocks, springs and the like. You can put on a hitch, but check what was upgraded on the tow package option if you want to move up to the 8K tow class. The rear end may be lower gears and the drive shaft and axles may be and upgrade also. Does the transmission stay the same or does it have a cooler on it?

There is too much involved with what you wish to accomplish to be financially practical. The changes involve key suspension components that would require an engineer to successfully execute. You can do the basics (shocks, springs, tow hitch etc, but as to making a specific upgrade it's a crap shoot at best

The HD Tow package includes a HD Trans cooler, a HD engine oil cooler, integraded brake, and 3:73 gears. The 1500 2WD has 3:08 gears and the 4WD has 3:42 gears. I don't believe there are any other adjustments. Also, the hitch that comes on the bumper is not rated for over 3500#s but is rated for up to 10K# if using a load balancing hitch.
