Ford escape 2005 cannot get the gear to park

Hi
I have a ford escape 2005 limited edition,
and for some reason when parking the car,
the car odometer does not reach "P". Hence
the key gets stuck in the ignition. Please
help.

I am not sure if I can do it on my own, scared of ruining things, any idea if I take my car to a mechanic how much would it cost me.
