How to tell if air filter needs to be replaced?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm about to put some coolant in my car. I haven't done a lot of auto work so I was going
through the manual before I did this (I've done it in an F-150 but I know I know little). I
noticed the air filter and it seems like something that should be replaced regularly that
people may skip.

I had some trouble with the place I took it to, and so I'm trying to learn this stuff myself, at
least to where I only have to bring it in for a tire rotation, or other complex stuff.

Is there any way you can tell if the air filter needs to be replaced? Short of calling the
place that was servicing my vehicle?

Visually inspect air filter if dirty replace it. If only minor dust in it you can blow it out with an air hose. It should be a bright white color. If dengy gray color replace it.
