You Escape is AWD, or All Wheel Drive or Front Wheel Drive, it comes in two versions. Lets assume you have AWD model. Look in your owners manual Page 205. When a wheel speed sensor detects that a wheel is not spinning at the right speed. rpm, compared to the speed the Escape is going, it either puts more power to that wheel or backs power off that wheel, if it's spinning way too fast as on ice. It even applies brake to one ore more wheels. But it's all automatic, there is no driver input, no controls. It's not a 4X4. It's a sophisticated Traction Control System. If you don't have your owners manual download it here: (Page 205) http://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/catalog/owner_guides/09204og1e.pdf
