ABS

Asked by David Apr 19, 2017 at 10:49 PM about the 2008 Kia Sorento LX 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I changed both my front axles and driver side axle
seal in my Sorento and when I put it back together
and filled the differential back up with gear oil I
noticed my abs and traction control lights are on
now. I didnt unhook anything electrical and when I
put a code reader on it That includes abs problems
I don't get any codes at all with the lights on or off.
Now the light will come on when first started and
then go off once moving but it comes back on after
about 100 yards. Now this was about 2 weeks ago I
changed those things this started but today I
noticed that while the lights are off I hear like a
knocking noise in the front end but it goes away
once the lights come back on! I'm lost as to what it
could be! Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

TrannyMan is right, you must have disturbed a front wheel speed sensor, more than likely in the wiring connection around the wheel speed sensors. If you have the ABS codes read, scanned, it would tell you which wheel to look at, and what problem to look for.

A click sound may be heard in the engine compartment when the vehicle begins to move after the engine is started. These conditions are normal and indicate that the Electronic Stability Control System is functioning properly. ESC is Kia's spin control Electronic Stability Control. It uses the ABS brake sensors to determine the individual wheel speeds and determine if the wheels are spinning, etc. The light should go on briefly when starting the vehicle but should then turn off. IF it stays on while driving, there is a code in the computer that needs to be diagnosed and fixed.

The click isn't coming from the engine. It's coming from the front driveline somewhere because I can feel it in my accelerator pedal! How would you go about diagnosing a computer code since an abs code reader didn't throw any codes when hooked to one! I have noticed that when the lights are off and it's making that noise that the headlights and dash lights will dim with the click noise in sequence! It doesn't do it at high speeds that I've noticed only at low speeds such as 10-20 mph when the lights are off! When the lights are on it makes no noise what so ever! I'm lost but almost to the point of taking it to the dealer to be diagnosed and fixed I just hate to see the bill afterwards. If I knew what was wrong I could fix it without a doubt, I just have no clue what it could be. Like I stated in my original post, I never unplugged, damaged or broke anything when changing the axles and replacing the seal. All I did was took it apart and put it back together and filled the diff back up with gear oil from where the seal had been leaking! So I'm hoping eventually if I keep posting someone will have had the same problem and be able to tell me what's up, I hope anyway, lol! All advice is welcome though!
