Silverado Sputters during acceleration

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2008 model Silverado, 6 cylinder. About 6 months ago, I noticed the engine sputtering or missing when I would accelerate (going up a grade or passing a truck). If I back off the gas, it seems to recover. Out of curiosity, I gave it a lot of gas when this started happening, and the check engine light started flashing. It seems to happen right around 2,000 RPMs. I took it to a mechanic, but they couldn't find anything wrong. The truck has about 90,000 miles.

Sounds like the famous EGR, which forces the engine to smell it's own exhaust during decelleration, unfortunately decides to not co-operate, either because it was not given instructions to 'let go now' due to a leaking or removed vacuum hose so has to smell it's own exhaust causing poor performance and a bad day about it. Suspect the EGR that would only be noticed by your smog guy.

In fairness to the mechanic, I hadn't gotten the light to turn on until after I took it in, but all of the other symptoms were present. Still surprised he couldn't find more...

...so you looked at the EGR, and it does not work/is buggered up. In that case, I'd recommend you mark the prior assessment "best answer" in the name of keepin it on the level~

Haven't had a chance to check EGR yet. Will let you know if that turns out to be the problem. Thanks.

You are too kind...what else can it be, after considerable thought. It is about the right age to start in-

I know this is a little late but might help someone.. If your using cheap gas that could be the issue too might want to try using an octane booster with a half a tank of gas.. You should notice a difference pretty quickly. These trucks act funny with cheapo gas.

I have the same problem, can someone please help. I have a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4.3L V6. At a stop light when accelerating the truck loses power for a second or two then goes back after letting of the gas. Then once i was cruising at 40 MPH when it happened and i kept accelerating then the check engine light flashed but did not stay on.

Could be your coil breaking down, distributor cap or rotor button. IF you put wires, plugs distributor cap and rotor, MAKE absolutely sure your gap on the plugs are 0.060. 4.3L v6s. But your told your plugs are pregaped regap them anyway it IS NOT always true. If all else fails you have a weak fuel pump.

Oh BTW if you think it's your egr valve, simply put a BB inside the vacuum line at the egr and Wala you've bypassed it and have no problems if that's actually what you think it could be. Ford's are notorious about egr s going bad making you think it's your trany acting crazy. I am a certified mechanic. You can reach me on Facebook Randy Lynn I have a black hat on that does say kid rock and I'll beat any mechanic price

But y'all believe me if u have the problems listed above it IS NOT your egr valve you can bypass it and it will not hurt anything. I have done this so many times in the 90s &2000s and they are still driving them today

But I do want all y'all to know the basic 3 basics that makes a vehicle run, #1-FUEL, #2-FIRE. And, #3-COMBUSTION.
