over drive function

newly acquired vehicle has a overdrive button at end of gear shift.  how to activate it and what purpose will it serve??

That sounds like the button to turn the overdrive on and off. Overdrive should be on by default but when you don't want the overdrive you press it and it is turned off. Press it again and it comes back on.
