when you attempt to start it, do you hear any noise? cranking? clicking? if you dont hear anything but clicking it's probably the battery, even tho your lights are on to start the car it needs more current and that year model has relays in it that may prevent it from attempting to crank if it doesnt get the proper voltage

Let me be more specific. You need spark, fuel/air and compression in the right ratios to start an engine. If the engine cranks but does not start then at least one of those is missing. Could be a number of reasons. Low/no fuel pressure. A bad ignitor, coil wire or plug. A leak in a vacuum line. A bad ECM or module. The list goes on and on. If the engine doesn't crank then check the starter. If it ran and you drove it with low oil for any amount of time you could burnt the bearings and when the car was parked and cooled off,the engine could have seized. It is really hard to say over the internet why a car won't start. There is too many variables. Best of luck,

Battery or starter, jump it, or hook up a voltmeter to make sure its putting out 10 to 13 volts, check for loose battery connection and or corrosion do all that before messing with the starter

Darkened dash when trying to start very likely is a weak battery. A weak battery will run lights and accessories. (As posted by stikz)They only use 15-20 amps. Cranking a cold engine takes much much more. That is why batteries are matched to the car with CCA or cold cranking amps. The amount of amps needed to crank the engine. If the battery is even a couple years old it can be could fine one day a not the next. Most auto parts stores will check it for free and charge it if it test "good". If the battery is "good" then you have ask why isn't the alternating charging it.
