Damage to engine from no oil cap insert for 3000 miles

Asked by Rcbmr Mar 30, 2016 at 09:16 PM about the 2008 BMW 1 Series 128i Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just realized today that a quicke oil change place threw out my oil cap insert
piece at my last oil change 4000 Kim's ago.
Car has vanos code again, already replaced once since that oil change. Car is
lunging forward with brakes applied at stop lights and rpm spikes and then
drops before settling back down. Had some knocking the other morning too,
how much damage could be caused by not having the oil filtered for that
long?

No low oil light came on, I have attached codes coming up. I changed oil and filter, oil was filthy brown. Could running it for 4,000 kilometres with no filtration cause these issues and damage? Maybe to cam edge? I switched vanos inlet and outlet sensors to see if the scanner would change diagnosis from inlet to outlet and the codes did not change, it stayed as inlet issue. Car still runs awful after oil change, worried perminanent damage done now. Thanks for your help on this.
