Ford Edge 2008 Cooing Fan Assembly

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

One motor (driver side) on the Cooling Fan Assembly stop working.  I
purchased an off brand from OReilly Auto Parts VDO FA70796.  When I plug
in the new fan assembly it immediately comes on.  The Main connect from the
car has approximately 12VDC on it but this didn't seem to matter with the old
assembly (one fan still works).  Do I need a different assembly or is there
something wrong with the PCM that might be applying to much current to the
Fan module?

Does your Edge come with tow package? There are two different fan assembly's one with and one without tow package. I had the same problem and I was given the one with tow package and I needed the one without so when I plugged it in the fans stayed on,to fix it I removed the module from the old fan and replaced on the new fan assembly and that did it. Easy it has one screw.

I found the problem: The fan assembly purchased from OReilly Auto Parts "VDO FA70796" is bad. This problem is with the part design the controller on the fan assembly has reverse logic. Meaning when the fan is suppose to be off its on and when its was suppose to be on it was off. I switch that controller with the originally controller (only my fan motors where bad) and it work fine. I returned the unit and purchased a different one from Advanced Auto, that unit work fine. BTW I tried two of the fan assemblies from OReilly Auto Parts both worked the same way. I spent a lot of time debugging this and I know that was the problem. I was able to connect a DMM to the control line and watch the transition of the control signal as the AC would come on then off when the car was shutoff. I performed this multiple times with both the original controller and the new one from OReilly's. I repeat this with the one from Advance Auto. Hope this helps someone else
