When the timing chain wears out. Some last the life of the vehicle. On modern vehicles with both crankshaft and camshaft position sensors a worn timing chain will set a trouble code in the computer and trigger the check engine light because the camshaft position and crankshaft position are no longer where they should be in relationship to each other. For example my '03 Chevy S-10 Pick Up has 289,000 miles on the original timing chain. HTH. -Jim

the engine in a 2008 edge has a timing chain, and it needs to be removed to replace the water pump which fails on that car around 80k sometimes it leaks externally like it should and other times it leaks into the oil pan and causing intermix which if not caught on time will damage the engine
