Subaru 08 Steering jerking/knocking

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I'm steering I'm getting a bad jerk and knocking in
my steering wheel and it seems to be much worse on
left turns. But it only happens in the cold or on slick
roads or snow. I have brand new half shafts on both
sides and the boots are fine. It doesn't jerk or knock in
warm temperatures on dry ground.

Still could be a badly rebuilt half-shaft, which is common. Start by squeezing the inner boots to ensure grease in the DOJs. For grins, ensure you don't have ice built up between the tires and inner fender shields!

I'll have to get back to you on that one later today but they've been on since February

You know that grinding sensation you feel under your feet when you slide on ice and abs kicks in? That's the same feeling in my steering wheel when I'm making turns specifically on ice. Not dry ground

Also I hear a faint audible ticking sound from my front end while I'm turning

Inspect the tires and make sure you are not running summer tires. The ticking noise when turning could be a bad CV joint.

Well I'm getting a diagnostic done Thursday and I hope its just a faulty CV joint. I just put two in last week so maybe one was bad. It's just really weird that it does this only on ice. I've used these tires on ice last in February March I don't think it's the tires.

Only on ice, eh? I wonder if your ABS is being activated with the automatic traction control if one wheel slips. I'd try removing the ABS fuse (or unplugging at the pump) to see if the juddering continues.
