my friend has a 08 corolla 1.8 1794 cc L4 1ZZFE dohc. they went on a long trip.180 miles one way. on their way back, with only 45 miles left to get back ,it just died.
was towed. he mentioned that he had to keep putting radiator fluid in it. the
mechanic took the head off and found that the pin that turns the cam was
sheard off. so no rotation there. what would cause that?
If the engine overheated it may have seized up.
Overheat caused the head to warp and locked up the cam in the cam journals shearing off the sprocket pin. Also a lack of oil can do the same thing. Usually if they got that hot or ran that low on oil the head is toast and will need to be replaced with a new complete unit.
