Asked by Alicia Jul 22, 2020 at 02:35 PM about the 2008 Lincoln MKZ AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car died battery shit replaced battery started car noticed
coolant low so added coolant and started to hear noise and
shut car off check oil and noticed coolant in oil. How to
check if it's just the internal water pump or if motor is bad.
Car has 220,000 miles on it. Has a 3.5 motor. No signs of
anything wrong before it died.

It's most likely a bad intake manifold gasket or blown head gasket. A bad water pump wouldn't allow coolant to get into the engine and mix with your oil. Since it made a noise and died you probably have a spun bearing because of the coolant in the oil. In my opinion it's not worth fixing, sorry! Jim

Check out this video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTaLmZj0w8E A friend's 2008 MKZ was towed to a shop after overheating. Upon inspecting the cooling system, water was found IN THE OIL. He was told the water pump needs to be replaced along with flushing the system and changing the oil and filter. The local Lincoln dealer verified this is possible.
