Car jerks while driving

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car jerks sometimes when i'm driving it and the check engine light came on.  This started about 2 months ago and i replaced the speed sensor and the crankshaft positioning sensor.  It was fine but it started doing the same thing a few days ago.  Any ideas.

not sure about the code. i took it to auto zone and the code they said it gave them was for the crankshaft positioning sensor.

I ended up taking it to the dealership. its the crankshaft sensor. I started doing a little research and it seems that a lot of people are having issues with this sensor. Its even caused some cars to just stop while driving. The sad part is that most of the stories i read resulted in having to keep taking the car back to the shop for the same part. Its obviously a defective item but no recall. If anyone hears of a recall let me know.

My roomate mustang was popping up with this code and I told him to check the alternato to see if it was good. So we took it off and it came bad so we change the alt and it fixed the light the hesitation so check you alt and there go from there....

I know it doesn't make sense but it has to do with the electrical power source.

I have the same car (2005 Nissan Altima 2.5L) with the same issue. Initially I had issues with camshaft position sensor. I replaced it an year ago. I got the check engine light a week back and I took it to auto parts shop and found that it is a speed sensor. I didn't replace the speed sensor but asked the guy to reset the check engine light and I didn't see it popping back up. Today while driving to office, I see the jerk at stop light and engine shut down. I started the car back and drove for few more yards and I can see jerks while pushing gas pedal. I parked the car and I can notice rpm raising high. I stopped the engine and came back after 2 hours and I don't see any signs of jerks or raising rpm. Please advise me if you have any ideas on this issue. Thanks!

Hello, I have replaced crankshaft position sensor and it fixed the issue. First time I replaced it with after-market part from Advanced autoparts and found it broken within an year. Later, I bought the part from Nissan dealer and replaced it myself and found the problem in week or two. I let Nissan dealer do it as it comes with warranty and they did it and replace the part I bought from them for free as it comes with warranty. After that, my car is running completely fine till now (knock on wood). I strongly recommend to do it at authorized Nissan service center when it comes to these kind of sensors.

If you see some check-engine light, then I would advise to know what it is. If you don't see a check engine light but your car jerks while driving, my guess is toward crankshaft position sensor. I had the same issue with my 2005 Nissan Altima and it fixed it. I can't guarantee it for sure but in-case if you found out your crankshaft position sensor need some replacement (if is never replaced), it is worth doing with a dealer. I tried with after market part and I found the issue with in few months. If you are cable of replacing the part, buy the part from authorized Nissan dealer. Part costs you around $120 ish. It is one hour labor work so depending on that you might spend around $250. Good Luck!

Be sure to check all vacuum hoses and especially the hose between the throttle body and the air breather compartment for cracks and small holes,,,Any type of outside air getting in will also cause the engine to jerk and backfire..

I had similar issues but it was only if I gave it fuel to quickly. At 55 mph no matter what it started bucking. I had to keep a very light acceleration and very light foot on gas peddle to make it home. Error Code of P0100 Mass Air Flow Sensor. Opened Air flow Inlet and their was no filament or sensor left in the Mass Air Flow Tube. Replaced with one from Junk Yard and ran perfect. The Sensor determines the Fuel/Air Mixture if no sense the car bucks, hesitates and jerks.

My 2015 Nissan Juke is doing the same thing . I have pretty well washed the Nissan dealership off my hands to go elsewhere for service and I am not happy having this issue that requires me to go back to the Dealership again. Time to trade it in.

I am have a very similar problem I have a 5 speed 2003 Nissan Altima this problem has just started a couple of days ago but when I am trying to take off out of first the car jerk very badly and the dash lights flash on and off it has died a few times but I can normally restart it and go with no problems if I’m lucky but it has even go as far as to lose all power to the car I mean no dash lights key would not turn over nothing If I had to describe it I would say it was like being hit by an EMP because the car was completely in mobile but I got it to the side of the road by coasting and wiggled the negative battery cable and it fired back up with no problems I have since then Replaced both terminals positive and negative and it is still acting up I don’t know what to do anybody have some advice I’m out of ideas

I have a 2004 Nissan Altima V6 and it jerks, turns off, and the rpm's go up causing an almost deafening noise inside the car. Already replaced crankshaft positioning sensors (2), mass air flow sensor, and gas pedal with no signs of relief. I've started the research for a new car and it will definitely not be a Nissan. I wish I would have changed my mind about getting a new car before I poured all the money that I spent into trying to revive this one, but live and learn. Bye bye for ever Nissan.

@Becky - Is the Parking Brake set? Some cars will reverse only when the parking brake is on.

Im having similar issues with my 2007 Altima 2.4 L. It was surging whenever going dwn a hill and applying the brake. My upper intake air duct was almost sheared in half so i replaced it. When starting car up again for first time, the rpms were then surging at just an idle. So i replaced the throttle body and gas pedal with no improvements whatsoever. Almost worse. Now anytime the cars in park its rpm are surging dramatically and surges/ bucks while driving. Idk what else to do. Ive already dumped so mich money into car barely had it a year and have outrageous payments still. Could my cvt transmission have anything to do with it. I know they've had some issues. My car has roughly 139000 miles. Any suggestions??

My 2010 Nissan Maxima is doing the same thing. I replaced the alternator today and it’s back to normal so far. Drove it at least 100 miles today.

Not sure if anyone said this or not. But when you change out the crankshaft or camshaft in this year of car you have to replace both or the car will chug and die out, have all kinds of issues. Replace both at the same time. I learned the hard way also.

Hi, I have a 2009 Nissan Altima 2.5S at 150k miles and recently started the problem. The car starts perfectly, but on moving fwd or back, starts jerking (seems only pass side wheel turns, driver side stuck) but once it starts rolling kept driving well into 30-50 MPH without any problem. CVT fluid changed about 120k miles. No codes on my obd-2 check box, but drove it to dealer (15 miles away) who reported codes p0744, p0868, p1718. They suggest Transmission repair ~$4.4k. Not worth, so I drive it back home, as it jerks only initially. Is this car salvageable or to be junked? The car originally purchased by me and serviced regularly. Experts, please help.
