The trans plate is underneath the motor/transmission. Remove all the bolts holding the pan on, but first drain the transmission fluid out if you don't want a mess. Remove the plate and then the filer. How many miles do you have on the transmission? Recommend service is over 100,000 miles. Is the fluid still clear and not smell burnt? Any problems with the transmission? If I remember when I had to replace the gasket that was leaking on my Buick Terraza, I had to drop the motor to clear some of the braces and brackets that prevented some of the bolts from being removed. So a 20 minute job turned into a full afternoon adventure. Make sure you have clearance on all bolts and pan before attempting any work. It may be more expensive, but less &*%%$#@@*& if you have a tranny shop do it.
