Transmission or transfer case?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
When in gear (automatic) my truck makes a
little noise like if something was loose. But
when I put it in park it stops. Transmission
fluid is good. Also I can move the 4x4
shifter without having to put the truck in
neutral. And it wasn't like that before.

check flex plate/converter bolts and u joints for a start...
shouldnt have to put it in neutral when shifting from 4 high to 2wd, only when shifting into 4 low, but when you have it in gear, will the truck move?, does it actually drive when you have it in 4 high or low or even in 2wd? does it make the same noise in 4 high and in 4 low? does it make the same noise in 2wd? if the noise is the same in all of these I would remove the flex plate cover (flywheel cover) or dust cover, (everyone has something different they call it, and do as kelly suggested and check the flywheel to torque converter bolts, also while your there check to see if you can see "cracks in the flywheel" if the flywheel is cracked (it's hard to see) it can come apart on you when you least expect it. had one on a blazer come apart on me at 70mph thru the bell housing, the floorboard and missed me but put a dent in the roof,.
sorry, didnt see how old that was until after I posted my answer, hope you fixed the problem
